Saturday Psalm & Praise

Saturday Psalm & Praise

"Do not fret because of evil men

or be envious of those who do wrong;

for like the grass they will soon wither,

like green plants they will soon die away.

Trust in the Lord and do good;

dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.

Delight yourself in the Lord

and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord;

trust in him and he will do this;

He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn,

the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.

Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;

do not fret when men succeed in their ways,

when they carry out their wicked schemes.

Refrain from anger and turn from wrath;

do not fret - it leads only to evil.

For evil men will be cut off,

but those who hope in the Lord will inherit the land."

Psalm 37: 1-9

WACKY SCIENCE: The Naked Egg?

Yes . . . I know, it's not Wednesday . . . but this is when I had time to post our WACKY WEDNESDAY experiment! sorry . . . AGAIN!
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
WACKY SCIENCE Wednesday

Today's experiment was very quick and easy to prepare for. We have been dicussing the make-up of a human cell. The naked egg experiment was chosen for two reasons: 1. It demonstrates the semi-permeability of the cell membrane for The "Scout" 2. The "Bug" benefited too. This was a great experiment to dicuss Scientific Method with her.

I have been trying to find experiments that both children enjoy. Not always a easy task with 5 years difference between them!

The Naked Egg

Experiment: Biology #63 in

Janice VanCleave's 201 Awesome, Magical, Bizarre & Incredible Experiments

What we used:

A Clean Canning Jar with lid

Vinegar

1 Uncooked Egg

1. Place the egg inside the jar - - - be careful not to crack the shell . . . that would equal a yucky smelly mess!

2. Cover the egg with the white vinegar. You only have to use enough to cover the top of the egg.
3. Put the lid on the jar and seal tightly.

4. Oberve what happens inside the jar immediately & document.
Now have the children observe the changes they see over the next 72 hours & document.
*NOTE: IF YOU CONDUCT THIS EXPERIMENT - Email Mrs. Mac
DO NOT DICARD THE EGG - You can conduct an additional experiement with the same egg. Mrs. Heather will email you the instructions*
You should see immediate results when bubbles of C02 began forming around the egg and on the surface of the vinegar. The vigegar is chemically reacting to the calcium carbonate of the shell. After 72 hours it will grow in size due to osmosis & the shell will be gone . . . tah, dah!!!
This was a great experiement to help the "Bug" (only 5) to make a hypothesis & help her document her results. Science seems to be a driving force for her to . . . there is an old familar twinkle in her eyes!

So let us know how your experiment went, you Wacky Scientists!

TOT SCHOOL Tuesday: Back-To-Tot School!

Tot School

We welcomed the chance to sit down together after class today and create our Tot School ideas to share. The "Bug" and The "Scout" love the idea of having an audience . . . hmm, I wonder where they get that from? (no comments, lol.)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
TOT SCHOOL

TOT SCHOOL Story Time

Today we are sharing an Usborne First Experiences book called: Going To School (good for our back-to-school month)
You can simply click the video below to see & hear the story!

In the TOT SCHOOL Craft Corner today, the "Bug" helped create a fun craft for learning shapes and colors. We are building a SCHOOL HOUSE using construction paper shapes.

Here is what you will need:

Colors
Paste

Manilla Paper
Various sizes and shapes of construction paper -

1 Yellow Circle, 2 Yellow Squares, 1 Large Red Square, 1 Small Red Square, 1 small purple triangle & 1 small purple rectangle

1. Paste the Large Red Square onto the manilla paper & the 2nd red square above it to form the base for your School House.

2. Next, add your purple triangle to the top of the building make your roof top.

3. Now add your purple rectangle as a door, your 2 yellow squares as a windows & your yellow circle as the sun, of course!

4. Let your tot identify the color and shapes of the items they are working with. Now let them add their own finishing touches. The "Bug" added window panes, a door knob, sunbeams & a school bell!
All that work made me hungry! Join us for TOT SCHOOL Snack Time!

This is one of the "Scout's" favorite snack time recipe.
BUGS ON A LOG

(Named for his sister, no doubt)
Here is what you will need:

2 stalks of celery cut into 3 inch logs

Peanut Butter

Raisens

Spreading utensil

1. Spread the peanut butter in the center of the celery logs.

2. Now take a few raisens to make your bugs crawling on the log.3. Now enjoy the bugs tickling your tummy as you eat.
4. We have the "Scout's" official approval!

WACKY SCIENCE: Growing An Alligator

WACKY SCIENCE Wednesday
The kids and I started our "Growing An Alligator" Experiement a couple of weeks ago and wanted to share the fun with our readers.

We purchased this kit last May at the Arlington Homeschool Book Fair. The kit came complete to do the entire experiment from start to finish. (You all know how much I love that!) We purchased from the neatest lady at Holy Cow Science. http://www.holycowscience.com/
*P.S. I am not an affiliate & I won't make a dime if you purchase her products - We just want her products to get some exposure - we really like them!*

This is what we started with for conducting our experiment:

Our kit came with the tiny alligator to grow, string, graphing paper, a tape mesure & instructions. I really liked that the instructions they gave had several additional options for conducting your experiement.
We added the scale to our experiment, it did not come in the kit.

1. We measured the alligator before immersing him in the water. Length and width. We used the sting provided to measure and then used the measuring tape on the string. Then the kids documented their results on the graph paper.
The alligator "pre" experiment
The "Scout" charting his results.

2. Next we weighed him on our scale. Then recorded our results.

3. Then we immersed him in the jar full of water and waited . . .

4. We measure his length and width each day and weigh him, recording our findings each time.
P.S. Little girls DO NOT like to touch the alligator! This is the "man's" job. lol!

Boy, is he ever getting bigger or what?!

We will let you know how are alligator's growth continues. The kids had a fun time with this experiment . . . they love science the most! I liked to see them working together and The "Scout" was able to conduct this experiment with his little sister, having very little help from me (I was just guiding & and adding facts). She learns so well when he is doing the teaching! The experiment has really help The "Bug" (only 5 years old) grasp the scientific method and helped her in understanding graphing and charting. It was also and excellent exercise in continuous learning. The "right now" method did not apply in this experiement. They have had to keep working on it everyday in order to have correct results.

We are hoping to get more from Holy Cow Science. This kit we just did is no longer available, but there are many others still to experience. The Science In A Bag kits run from $4.95 to $8.95 per kit. They also carry some awesome Science Project Kits, that really help with presentation, method and much more. We are hoping to let The "Scout" enter a Science Project this spring, we'll probably want one of these kits then. Holy Cow Science is a christian business with science knowledge to boot . . . give them a try.

What we will be purchasing next . . .
* The Beat Goes On (Science Project Kit) $19.95
* UB The UV Detective! (Science In A Bag Kit) $8.95
* The Golden-rod Rule! (Science In A Bag Kit) $5.95
* Wacky Water Tricks! (Science In A Bag Kit) $4.95
* Bag of Geodes (Science In A Bag Kit) $4.95

Have some Wacky Science fun of your own & post your comments below . . .

How does your alligator grow?

The Frontiersman's Daughter: A Book Report . . . Review!

*Giveaway Closed*
This prize has been awarded and the winner contacted.

Thanks and come again!

Since homeschooling my two children, book report time has become one of my favorite activities . . . not so much the children’s favorite as my own. I love to learn about their unique opinions on a book and determine how well they retained the author’s message. With that in mind, I have taken a challenge to produce some book reports of my own. Being a grown up now, we’ll just call them book reviews . . . it just sounds more grown-up.

The Frontiersman’s Daughter by Laura Frantz was a truly enjoyable read for my first “official” book report . . . Oh, I mean book review! This story follows the life of a young woman, Lael Click, and her family living in a barely civilized Kentucky settlement. The author was very descriptive in the smallest details of frontier living, no doubt, gained from the author’s grandmother, whom she recognizes on the dedication page of the book. I believe this book truly grasps the frontier spirit, lifestyle and language, which makes the book fascinating and educational. I learned many phrases, terms and slang that I had no knowledge of previously.

Excerpt from novel:

“Here and there hung linsey dresses, a pair of winter boots, some woolen leggins, strings of dried apples and leather-britches beans, bunches of tobacco, and other sundry articles.”

This story takes a look at the frontier life, as seen by a young woman, just coming of age. I enjoyed the perspective of the heroine, Lael, whose caring spirit and nature are constantly pushing her to confront difficult issues, typical & not-so-typical to frontier life. She makes some amazing discoveries along her journey that come though enduring some heavy losses and trials. Lael is ultimately challenged in her faith and beliefs throughout these trials. The author was good at keeping me guessing, which is not typically easy to do. Lael’s story is full of interesting frontier citizens; Native American’s and new exciting strangers that help teach her and challenge her. The author is talented at uncovering the true trials and temptations that a young woman on the untamed frontier would have face. This book may also be a good selection for a young teen woman, struggling with today’s peer pressure and purity. I enjoyed the fresh perspective on this time in America’s history and I think you may, as well.

You can read more about this book and the author at http://www.laurafrantz.net/

You can also pre-order your book there.
