HIS Kids Craft: Craft Stick Flag

HIS Kids Feature Craft #1 July 2009

CRAFT STICK FLAG
(Not intended for children under 3 years of age. Adult supervision recommended.)

Craft “Purpose-filled” Benefits: Manual Dexterity, Patriotism, Patterns, Sense of Accomplishment, Faith in government, American Heritage.

Materials Needed:
Craft Sticks
Paint
Glue
Paint Brush
Sequins
Blue Construction Paper (cut into small 3x3 square)

1. Paint 5 craft sticks red and 4 craft sticks white. Allow to dry for a few minutes.

2. Glue sticks together in an alternating pattern by gluing them on to one craft stick on the right side and two additional (cut) craft sticks, one in the center and one on the left side of flag. Allow to dry.

3. Glue blue construction paper square to the upper left hand corner of the flag.

4. Glue your silver sequins on the blue construction paper to represent stars.

5. When glue has completely dried, turn flag over and add the additional craft stick to make a pole for your flag.

6. Discuss with your child the meaning of the American Flag in our daily lives. Discuss the correct symbolism of the American Flag (13 red and white stripes represents the 13 colonies and 50 stars represents the 50 US states). Talk about why freedom was important to the founding fathers and why they fought for independence.
