Martin the Reformer {Reformation Day}: True Heroes

* This post may contain affiliate links.  Please see our full statement of disclosure here.  Thank you for your support.
Martin Luther

A lone monk with 95 real issues for the church of his day, nailed his complaints to his "community board", or the church door at Wittenburg, Germany, October 31st, 1517.  The challenge?  To get other church leaders and theologians to pay attention and come closer in faith toward God . . . he did just that, and he changed the world in the process!

Romans 1:17 NKJV
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.”

The celebration of Reformation Day, to our family, is a practice in giving thanks to God for His amazing Providential hand in history.  We choose to give honor to God and recognize His uncanny ability to use whomever He chooses to shape and form the times.

We are focusing specifically on the life of Martin Luther, the reformer, as we prepare to celebrate a day of thanksgiving this Reformation Day.  Here are some resources and activities we will be using:

Our main reading source will be Mystery of History, Volume III
Heritage History's Christian Europe e-books on CD - I cannot tell you how much I have enjoyed having these e-books!  We come back to them over and over again.

This post is a part of our True Heroes series for October.  We are giving thanks for those who would stand, at the peril of loosing this life, to share what God has, in His infinite wisdom, revealed to them.  Not that they were perfect, for Martin the reformer was not, nor are any of us, he was just courageous and with zeal for the Lord.

FI♥AR: The Tale of Peter Rabbit

"Rowing" the Week
The Tale of Peter Rabbit *
{FIAR} Volume II

One of the best loved children's authors, telling one of the best loved children's stories of all time.  Rowing just doesn't get any better than this.  This was our first book to row after our summer schooling session, so we were both ready to get back to sharing this time together.

The Bug and I worked together on our Nature Table - we found this quite Pinteresting - so we tried it ourselves.  Decorating for our rowing may become a new tradition.  It really set the tone, mood and setting, plus opened up discussion about our book before we even began reading.

Language Arts:
  • Dictation of vocabulary from The Tale of Peter Rabbit
  • Discussed the principle of onomatopoeia and listed the examples from the story.
Geography/History:
Science:
  • Discussed Naturalists, what they do & why.
  • Visited our local nature center and got to here from some Master Naturalists, plus catch butterflies . . . bonus!
Composition:
  • We wrote a letter of apology to Mr. McGregor from Peter.  The Bug really enjoyed this activity.
Art:

  • Enjoyed . . . not really, tolerated making rabbits with painted hand-prints. (Generally speaking she just does not enjoy getting her hands dirty, unless she is ACTUALLY in the garden.)

Home Economics:
  • Salad Preparation
  • Peeling and Cutting Carrots
I have provided links in this post to the FREE resources we used to complete our Rowing.  Here are the printables that I created.  Please feel free to download them for you family to row with too:

We are taking a two week break in our Five-in-a-Row schedule.  The Bug is a bit taken with Little House on The Prairie . . . again, and we will be finishing a couple of these Laura Ingalls Wilder reads until after Thanksgiving.

What is in on your reading list this week?

Happy Homeschooling!

This is How We Row: FI♥AR Notebooks

Oh Five-in-a-Row, How I love thee, let me count the ways . . .

We will "row" probably until it goes out of style . . . and even then, probably "row" a little longer.  The Bug and I, as well as my entire Co-op Classroom, enjoy the unity and common thread that Five-in-a-Row gives to our classroom and home education.  One of the elements that both student and teacher enjoys is Notebooking or Lapbooking.  If you are a home educator, these are not new terms.  If you are saying, "She sure needs to use spell check before she sends out these posts!" . . . then, you are not familiar with Notebooking or Lapbooking, or at least not yet.  Stay with me.

FI♥AR (Five-In-A-Row) Lapbooking or Notebooking is simply a means to document your Five-in-a-Row journey, as well as your homeschooling journey in general.  Notebooking is my preferred method, as I enjoy using the Principled Approach in our own homeschool.  This method of teaching focuses on producing, rather than consuming.  The beauty of this method, is that the child gets an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and, I find, a greater enjoyment of learning.  A FI♥AR Lapbook or Notebook will include the various projects, copywork, dictation and activities that a child produces in the course of studying a FI♥AR book selection.  You can use may different methods to document this journey.  Here a few links that you can click to if you are unfamiliar with the methods I am discussing: Lapbooks and Notebooks.

At Homeschool Co-op, we use the Homeschool Portfolio to "house" our Five-In-A-Row Notebook.

Students take great pleasure and pride in producing their Notebooking pages.  Something special happens when a child knows their work is going into the "oh, so special" sheet protector!  The work gets neater, the hand a bit steadier and the smile bigger.  Here is a peek inside our Notebooks at Co-op:

I hope you have enjoyed a quick glance into our Five-in-a-Row Notebook.  Hoping that you will continue to "row" right along with us.

We will continue to take a "rowing" break as we finish all things Co-op (it is our last week, next week).  Then my kids and I will take a break for a couple of weeks, then back to Summer School fun and rowing with the Bug!

Happy Rowing!
