Library Spotlight: Sebastian's Roller Skates

LIBRARY SPOTLIGHT

I will be highlighting a book each month that is from our own home library.  I will include unit studies, notebooking pages, activities, crafts and art - for optimal homeschool fun.  Today I will feature this fun and engaging book: Sebastian's Roller Skates

The Bug really enjoys this book and has been reading it since Kindergarten.   It has wonderful illustrations and has many themes that you can pull from while reading this to your child.

You can check out Sebastian's Roller Skates ONLINE for FREE!

to read online with the Screen Actor's Guild Storyline ONLINE

Now let's have some more storytime fun!

Language Arts:
Have your little one give you a narrative of the story you just read to them.  They can draw you a picture and tell you about the story.

Social Studies:
Research Roller skates, the history, how to roller skate, the development of the roller skate (roller blades) and go on a field trip to an old fashioned skating rink.

Physical Education:

  • Roller Snacks: Make a tasty roller snack using a muffin tin and using all circle shaped foods.

Cherrios

M and M's
Trix

Globe Grapes
Cherry Tomatoes

  • Talk about things around the room that have a circle shape like the wheels on Sebastian's roller skates.

  • Use Roller Skate theme to review the letter R.  Here is the download for a play-dough mat, you can use it to practice your letter R.

We hope you enjoy reading and roller skating with your family!

OWL MOON
by: Jane Yolin
{FIAR}

"Rowing" the Week (@ Co-op)

*Note: Five in a Row is made to be a five day curriculum - as we only attend Co-op 3 days per week, I will post what we have done in class and fun resources for that you may want to do at home. (Not REQUIRED homework - just some family fun options.)

Wednesday:
Language Arts - We discussed Similes and Metaphors during "Rowing" discussion today.  The author uses several throughout the book.

Thursday:
Science - "Phases of the Moon" Oreo Snack
We used this awesome snack (okay, maybe not health wise - but the kids loved it!) to illustrate and discuss the phases of the moon.
{Photo Credit HERE}

Bible - We discussed the Biblical characteristics of self-control and bravery.  The child in our story had to display these qualities in the book while walking in the dark, shadowy woods at night.

Art - We constructed some lovely Mosaic Owls for our Homeschool Portfolios (Parents: If you haven't had a chance to stop by and peek at your student's work come on by.  They have been working hard and have taken care in building their portfolios this semester.  I am proud of their efforts.)

WHOOOO'S Owl is this?  Let's play a game!  1st Co-op student to tell me WHOOOO's owl this is get 10 bonus points! (Please tell me at Co-op class-time - do not reveal on this blog.)

Co-op HOMEWORK: Complete Notebooking pages for Owl Moon - The complete project should be glued to provided cardstock and placed in sheet protector.  These need to be returned to Mrs. Mac on Tuesday next week to place in our Homeschool Portfolios.

P.S.  Ask my kids to give you a Great Horned Owl hooting demonstration, I think they may oblige.

FIAR Fun at Home options:

  • Nature Study - Discover God in His wonderful creation, just as the child and Dad did in our story.  Take some card stock and some simple rings to create a Nature Journal.  Go exploring and use your journal to make observations and sketch pictures of the beauty God created.

  • Owl Moon Snack - This is a cute one I found on Pinterest! (I know, I have a problem . . . )

  • Owl Collage - Make a collage with pictures of owls or other woodland animals.

  • Current Phase of the Moon -

International Night

The kids and I enjoyed the festivities this past Saturday evening at International Night, sponsored by Generations Church, here in our little home town.  The evening was filled with food, fellowship, gifts, prizes, lots of fun and inspiration for the family!  Generations Church invites missionaries and organizations to come and set up educational booths each year at International Night.

When we arrived, we were greeted by church members who donned us each with Hawaiian leis.  Then we were signed in and given a swag bag, Missionary Scavenger hunt sheet and a Passport.  We also stopped by and registered for the door-prizes.

Then we started our journey around the world by collecting stamps from each Missionary's booth. We also collected signatures from various people on our Missionary Scavenger hunt sheets.  The kids had lots of fun and learned tons by using their Missionary Scavenger hunt sheet.  Example:   Squeaker enjoyed listening to a story from a South African missionary who entranced her with stories of wild animals and being on safari.  The Scout met a missionary who was also a pilot.  The Bug enjoyed all the missionaries from Haiti (see below) including the husband and wife doctor team that run a clinic in Haiti!

The kids enjoyed eating the cuisine from the various Missionary booths and collecting all the stamps in their Passports.  They collected many cultural goodies from each booth to fill their swag bags to over-flowing.  When their Passports and Scavenger hunt sheets were complete, then received a prize.  The Squeaker also won a door prize, a Moroccan Hat and a book about Gladys Aylward, a famous missionary in China.  We later found her name in Chinese on the internet (inspired by an International Night activity, see below).

The Bug's swag bag, filled with missionary inspiration.

Here is "Jesus Loves [The Bug]" in Chinese

The Squeaker trying to quietly enjoy shortbread at the Scotland booth.  She just loves having her picture taken, can't you tell?

This is my favorite!!!  The Bug thinks that Terry Snow, Director of YWAM (Youth With A Mission) Haiti, is a rock star.  Look at that smile on her face, she is beaming!  She waited all week for this very moment.  She has supported YWAM Haiti with her own fundraising for over 2 years now and she has not seen Terry since she was 4 years old!  She acted like going to International Night and meeting Terry was like being backstage at a U2 concert.  I love that about her!  Notice her baby?  That is David, she "adopted" him from Haiti 2 years ago.  She is just too cute and I can't help it if I think so.

The Bug could not leave the festivities until she had single-handedly located the Haitian flag.

Great evening, great fun and great reminder that there are many that do for the Lord's kingdom, each day, without complaint.  Life in my little corner of the world isn't so tough when I look at these warriors for Christ!

Here is an awesome sign I found:
Mis-sion-ary (noun):  someone who leaves their family for a short time, so that others may be with their families for an ETERNITY.

Thank you for an amazing evening of fellowship Generations Church.
Thank you to the special men and women who lay their lives down daily, as missionaries, and take up their cross to follow Him.

Happy Homeschooling!
