Here are a few of the recipes that we use around the house (rainy days especially).
Homemade Playdough (NOT EDIBLE)
2 CUPS FLOUR
4 TEASPOONS CREAM OF TARTAR
1 CUP SALT
1 1/2 - 2 CUPS BOILING WATER
3 - 4 TABLESPOONS VEGETABLE OIL
FOOD COLORING OF CHOICE
Add oil and food coloring to boiling water. Combine remaining ingreadients and mix well. As you knead it, the dough will get smoother. Store in airtight container.Get your favorite little sculptor and begin to mold!
SALT CLAY "Bakeable" (STILL NOT EDIBLE)
2 CUPS PLAIN FLOUR
1 CUP SALT
1 - 1 1/2 CUPS COLD WATER
2 TABLESPOONS COOKING OIL
Stir together. Knead well until it forms a soft ball. Line a baking tray with aluminum foil, make the shapes you want, and bake in the oven at 300 degrees or until hard (about 1 hour).Use cookie cutters or mold Salt Clay by hand before baking. Create refrigerator magnets, jewelry, ornaments, keychains, necklaces and more. You can paint after baking and finish with shellac or clear acrylic.Ask my mom how many gifts she has received over the years, with the use of this very medium. lol.
HOMEMADE FINGER PAINT (UM, IS THIS EDIBLE . . . NO!)
1/4 CUP CORNSTARCH
2 CUPS WATERFOOD COLORING
Mix ingredients in saucepan. Boil until mixture thickens. Allow to cool, then pour into jars or other storage containers and color with food coloring. Best used on glossy paper such as butcher or shelf paper.Invite your Picaso to begin creating. It could be worth something someday!
