Fruit Salad, Yes . . . A Little Late in the Season

I know that the season for fantastic fruit salad is fading quickly.  It's the fruit salad that I will miss . . . NOT the summer season!  Yuck.  Look, I live in Texas, if you don't live in Texas, YOU HAVE NO IDEA.  Don't judge.

Summer is gone (Woot-Woot) and I want you to learn my fantastic secret to the most wonderful, everyone-will-rave-about, fruit salad.

Ingredients:
  • IN SEASON FRUIT
The last batch I made had grapes, apples, strawberries, nectarines, and bananas
  • Walnuts (optional) and Coconut (optional)
  • Orange (Juice is used to squeeze on top before tossing)
  • And the secret ingredient . . .

Did you spot it in the picture?  Yep, just your run-of-the-mill Vanilla Honey{insert your favorite flavor here} Greek Yogurt.

That's it!
  • Chop your fruit anyway that floats your boat.
  • Squeeze orange juice over the top.
  • Mix in 1 - 1 1/2 cups of Greek yogurt
  • Add a bit of coconut and walnuts, just if you want to feel fancy about your fruit salad. :)
  • Chill. . . not you, the salad.  Enjoy.
So "au revoir" to Summer and "bonjour" happy times of the Fall!
What Fall food favorites are you most looking forward to?

ME . . . PUMPKIN!  All things pumpkin, please!

Gluten Free Zucchini Bruschetta

I know it certainly doesn't "look" like the most kid-friendly appetizer, but if you get those little hands helping in the kitchen you maybe surprised at the results.

None of my children are big tomato eaters, not even the tasty ones from our garden (the tomatoes are tasty, not my kids).  However, when the kids make something on their own, the taste of the food is magically changed into a totally tasty treat.  Amazing!

Zucchini Bruschetta

Ingredients:
Roma Tomatoes
Zucchini
Green Onions
Fresh Garlic
Fresh Basil
Mozzarella Cheese

Directions:

  • Slice Zucchini in half and then slice thinly vertically to make a "base" for your bruschetta.

  • Lightly coat both sides of the zucchini with oil (we use extra virgin coconut oil, warmed a little).
  • Slice Roma tomatoes as pictured above.  Chop garlic.
  • Prepare mozzarella by slicing or grating (you will see in the picture below that the Bug chose to use her mozzarella sticks).
  • Stack the zucchini on a baking sheet with garlic, tomato, leaf of basil and mozzarella to top.
  • Bake at 400 degrees for 15 - 20 minutes, or until cheese is completely melted and bubbly.
  • Serve immediately as an appetizer or side-dish.

Laundry, Quilts & Building Character: Day 3 --->10 Days of Little House Learning

We hope you are having a blessed time of learning and fellowship with your "Little Prairie" pupil.  I think that I may enjoy all this frontier atmosphere even a tiny bit more than my kid!

Today we will cover some "character building" projects.

TUESDAY:
  • Continue Reading Little House book of your choice.  We have continued "Little House on the Prairie".

  • Start Laura's Bear's-Track Quilt Pillow.
Here is an excerpt from On The Banks of Plum Creek to read-aloud before beginning your quilting project:

"Mary was still sewing nine-patch blocks.  Now Laura started a bear's track quilt.  It was harder than a nine-patch because there were bias seams, very hard to make exactly right before Ma would let her make another, and often Laura worked several days on one short seam."

Optional: Add exterior sashing

The "Bear's Track Block" Pattern Pillow is a project we have started using the My Little House on the Prairie Crafts Book.  You could easily adapt and use this Bear's Track Block Pattern online, and simply construct 4 blocks together, with trim, to make your own pillow.
  • Hand-Washing Clothes ---> I know this doesn't sound like fun, but you would be surprised what a novelty it can be to a child.  We found a wash board at a garage sale for $0.25 and picked it up.  Then I taught the Bug how to make using Fels-Naptha natural laundry soap.  (This is also the soap that I use in my homemade laundry soap.)
The Bug joyfully washing laundry in the backyard.
The lessons today provided many opportunities to discuss how fortunate we are and all the modern conveniences that we enjoy in this country, and take for granted.  The Bug made the statement that she would love to work and wash like the pioneers "everyday".  I encouraged her, yet reminded her that one of the reasons she enjoys it so much is, more than likely, due to the fact that she doesn't HAVE to do it everyday. ;)

I hope you will join us tomorrow for some more fun in learning on the frontier!

Be sure to join us tomorrow for Day 4 of 10 Days of Little House Learning!

Frontier House, Sabbath & Church: Day 2 - 10 Days of Little House Learning

We continued our learning fun yesterday with some traditional rest on the Lord's day.  The pioneers needed this blessing greatly by the end of their work week!  Here is a look at what we discussed today during our 10 Days of Little House Learning:

SUNDAY:
This is an older PBS series from 2001 that we rented from our local library.  I have enjoyed using it to help us learn more about the pioneers and homesteaders of the Western frontier, not to mention the realization of how blessed we are in this century with all that we do have.  We only watch it using the ClearPlay though. (Some topics are not appropriate for children, and some language)
  • Discussed the Sabbath Day rest and its sacredness during the pioneering times.
You can read this excerpt from Little House In The Big Woods to help you discuss the Sabbath Day rest.  Chapter 5 "Sundays" Page 83 - Page 100

Here is a link to a song called My Sabbath Home from the book On The Banks of Plum Creek.

The Party, Hopscotch & Buttermilk Pie! --->10 Days of Little House Learning

The act of simply being content with right where you are in life.  The joy of family and friends, that are not perfect, just like you.  The faith in the God who has always met your needs and has never let you down.  The heritage of courage on the western frontier.  This is why we love Little House books and come back to them again and again.

My youngest daughter, The Bug, is especially entranced by all things Wilder and Pioneer in origin.  She has read most of the Laura Ingalls Wilder series.  She recently rented "Frontier House", a PBS reality series on pioneer living and tortured her old brother with 4 hours of viewing during our recent vacation.  This viewing has only reignited the flame of pursuit for all things pioneer. (Not that said flame really need reigniting, it is pretty much a continual flame with her.)

As the pro-active, totally-in-tune with my kids, homeschooling fanatic mom that I am, I decided of course to feed her need to learn.  We are currently enjoying the many lessons, chores, songs, game, handicrafts and literature of pioneer life.  We will be sharing them with you during our 10 Days of Little House Learning series.  Come strap on your bonnet and join the fun!

We will kick off the fun with a party - A Little House On The Prairie Birthday party of course.  This is how to throw a little over the top, Little House party:

1.  Enjoy some traditional frontier fare!
Wooden Spoons, made by The Bug's talented daddy, Ma's Butter Cookies & Sister Stump's Buttermilk Pie (Gluten-Free for us, of course).

I tried my hand at homemade Kettle Corn.  Our taste-buds say, "Yes" - my tired mommy hands say, "No".

The Bug made homemade lemonade and we served in mason jars with cute cupcake liner lids and straws.  We set out a few of our favorite Pioneer Reads . . . just in case there wasn't enough to do???

The Bug created a little mercantile with traditional candies like lemon drops, butter mints, caramels, Bob's sweet stripes & salt water taffy.
2. Make some butter.

3.  Play hopscotch with a friend.
4.  Wash & hang some laundry, the old fashioned way.

5. Challenge your friends to a game of Hoop and Stick

6. Take a little time to jump some rope.

7.  Make rag dolls in the green grass.

8.  Force your 13 year old brother to wear suspenders for authenticity.

9.  Give the "little pint of cider half drunk up" a wagon full of pioneer presents.

10.  Turn the lights all back on (as the little one thought we should all go without electricity for the day), have a hot cup of tea, and go to sleep.
"Good night Ma, Good night Pa, Good night John Boy." ---> Ooops, wrong frontier family. . . Am I showing my age???

Join us tomorrow for some more learning on the frontier!

 Happy Homeschooling on the Prairie!

Underwater Ocean Murals: Quick Tutorial

During our recent study of Columbus we spent time discussing the "Green Sea of Darkness", known to us in the twenty-first century as the Atlantic Ocean.  I found this adorable painting option for some "under the Green Sea" artistic expression.

The kids discussed and notebook-ed about Atlantic Ocean life and the new animals that would have been "under the Green Sea of Darkness" as Columbus made his way to the new world.  Then we had a little fun with bubble wrap.

MATERIALS NEEDED:  Manilla paper, Drawing Pencils, Coloring Pencils, Paint and Bubble Wrap.

1.  First sketch and color your picture of life under the sea.  Here the Squeaker sketched various tropical fish, starfish, jellyfish, seaweed, coral and an octopus.

2.  Next, lightly brush your bubble wrap with tempera or watercolor paints, on the bumpy side of the bubble wrap.

3.  Simply turn the bubble wrap onto your sketching and lightly push down around the work.  Continue this process until you have reached the desired "bubbles under the sea" effect.  Allow to dry and display.

FI♥AR: The Tale of Peter Rabbit

"Rowing" the Week
The Tale of Peter Rabbit *
{FIAR} Volume II

One of the best loved children's authors, telling one of the best loved children's stories of all time.  Rowing just doesn't get any better than this.  This was our first book to row after our summer schooling session, so we were both ready to get back to sharing this time together.

The Bug and I worked together on our Nature Table - we found this quite Pinteresting - so we tried it ourselves.  Decorating for our rowing may become a new tradition.  It really set the tone, mood and setting, plus opened up discussion about our book before we even began reading.

Language Arts:
  • Dictation of vocabulary from The Tale of Peter Rabbit
  • Discussed the principle of onomatopoeia and listed the examples from the story.
Geography/History:
Science:
  • Discussed Naturalists, what they do & why.
  • Visited our local nature center and got to here from some Master Naturalists, plus catch butterflies . . . bonus!
Composition:
  • We wrote a letter of apology to Mr. McGregor from Peter.  The Bug really enjoyed this activity.
Art:

  • Enjoyed . . . not really, tolerated making rabbits with painted hand-prints. (Generally speaking she just does not enjoy getting her hands dirty, unless she is ACTUALLY in the garden.)

Home Economics:
  • Salad Preparation
  • Peeling and Cutting Carrots
I have provided links in this post to the FREE resources we used to complete our Rowing.  Here are the printables that I created.  Please feel free to download them for you family to row with too:

We are taking a two week break in our Five-in-a-Row schedule.  The Bug is a bit taken with Little House on The Prairie . . . again, and we will be finishing a couple of these Laura Ingalls Wilder reads until after Thanksgiving.

What is in on your reading list this week?
