Laundry, Quilts & Building Character: Day 3 --->10 Days of Little House Learning

We hope you are having a blessed time of learning and fellowship with your "Little Prairie" pupil.  I think that I may enjoy all this frontier atmosphere even a tiny bit more than my kid!

Today we will cover some "character building" projects.

TUESDAY:
  • Continue Reading Little House book of your choice.  We have continued "Little House on the Prairie".

  • Start Laura's Bear's-Track Quilt Pillow.
Here is an excerpt from On The Banks of Plum Creek to read-aloud before beginning your quilting project:

"Mary was still sewing nine-patch blocks.  Now Laura started a bear's track quilt.  It was harder than a nine-patch because there were bias seams, very hard to make exactly right before Ma would let her make another, and often Laura worked several days on one short seam."

The "Bear's Track Block" Pattern Pillow is a project we have started using the My Little House on the Prairie Crafts Book.  You could easily adapt and use this Bear's Track Block Pattern online, and simply construct 4 blocks together, with trim, to make your own pillow.
  • Hand-Washing Clothes ---> I know this doesn't sound like fun, but you would be surprised what a novelty it can be to a child.  We found a wash board at a garage sale for $0.25 and picked it up.  Then I taught the Bug how to make using Fels-Naptha natural laundry soap.  (This is also the soap that I use in my homemade laundry soap.)
The Bug joyfully washing laundry in the backyard.
The lessons today provided many opportunities to discuss how fortunate we are and all the modern conveniences that we enjoy in this country, and take for granted.  The Bug made the statement that she would love to work and wash like the pioneers "everyday".  I encouraged her, yet reminded her that one of the reasons she enjoys it so much is, more than likely, due to the fact that she doesn't HAVE to do it everyday. ;)

I hope you will join us tomorrow for some more fun in learning on the frontier!

Be sure to join us tomorrow for Day 4 of 10 Days of Little House Learning!

  1. Am I missing something... I cannot find the rest of this series. I saw 1-3 and I was looking forward to seeing what else you came up with in 4-10. We are getting ready to study the Little House series and I have been on the hunt for ideas to make it fun and memorable. I really enjoyed reading the hands on lessons you came up with! :)

    1. You caught me . . . I dropped the proverbial blogging ball. They are all completed activity-wise, but sitting in my drafts folder waiting to be published. YIKES!

I will get moving on finishing those posts and get the remaining days of 10 Days of Little House enjoyment out on the blog-o-sphere. Yep, I love ya'll that much. Thanks for the patience. ;)
